Duvet Tog Guide: How To Choose The Right Tog For Each Season

Choosing the perfect duvet can make a world of difference to your sleep quality throughout the year. With the British weather being as changeable as it is, finding a duvet that suits every season can seem like a challenging task. But don’t worry! At Secret Linen Store we’re here to guide you through the wonderful world of duvet togs to help you choose the right duvet for each season.

Whether you’re a one-leg-in, one-leg-out sleeper, a side-snoozer or a starfisher, we have a list of fabulous duvet choices to suit all sleep styles and bedding preferences.

Understanding Tog Ratings

Firstly, what exactly is a tog rating? The British term ‘tog’, short for ‘thermal overall grade’, measures the warmth and insulation of a duvet. The higher the tog rating, the warmer the duvet will be. While a lower tog rating means –you guessed it– a lighter, cooler duvet.

To help you learn more about duvet togs, let’s break down each tog, categorising them by season.

What Duvet Tog is Best for Summer?
(2.5 - 7.5 Tog)

As the temperatures rise and the days get longer, it's time to switch to a lighter duvet. A duvet with a tog rating of 4.5 to 7.5 is ideal for spring and summer months in the UK. These duvets are breathable and keep you comfortably cool during warmer nights, ensuring you don't overheat.

Your bed linen can also make all the difference to temperature regulation, so in the summer we would suggest 100% cotton percale or 100% linen bedding for a light and airy feel.

Prefer to ditch the duvet altogether when it's hot? We hear you. Sometimes bedding and blankets are just too much, so swapping to a breathable flat sheet will keep you cooler during those unpredictable British heat waves!

What Duvet Tog is Best for Spring and Autumn? (9 - 10.5 Tog)

Notoriously known as those trickier ‘in-between’ seasons, spring and autumn often bring us cooler evenings and a need for a slightly warmer duvet. For the perfect middle-of-the-road option, we recommend duvets rated between 9 and 10.5 togs offer the perfect balance of warmth and comfort during these transitional months. This tog range provides enough insulation to keep you snug as a bug without being too heavy.

For seamless temperature regulation during these months, be sure to consider our spring/autumn weight wool duvet.

What Duvet is Best for Winter?
(13.5 -15 Tog)

When winter arrives, it's time to bring out the big guns – cue the higher tog duvets! A tog rating of 13.5 to 15 will keep you warm and toasty during the coldest nights. These duvets provide excellent insulation, trapping heat to ensure a cosy sleep experience even when the temperatures drop outside.

All-Year-Round Duvets
(4.5 - 9 Tog)

If you prefer to keep things simple and use the same duvet all year round, opt for a mid-range tog rating of 7.5 to 10.5.

At Secret Linen Store, we have an All Seasons Duvet which includes a 4.5 tog and 9 tog duvet that can be buttoned together in winter to create 13.5 tog - or kept separated in summer for a lighter layer. This option strikes a balance between warmth and breathability, making it suitable for any time of year.

Which Secret Linen Store Duvet Should I Choose?

The easiest way to narrow down your choices is to decide whether you’d like a natural or synthetic filling, so let’s split these into two categories.

Wool Duvets

Wool has natural insulating properties that help maintain a comfortable temperature. Thanks to its natural fibres, it keeps you warm in the winter and cool in the summer by wicking away moisture. The natural loft and weight of wool can create a snug and secure sleeping environment, providing a cosy, comforting feel.

The wool in our Baa Baa Bedtime Organic Wool Duvet has been layered and encased in a 100% cotton cover and is available in three different weights for the different seasons. This duvet has a lofty quilt-like feel to it and offers fabulous temperature-regulating and hypoallergenic properties.

Synthetic Duvets

Synthetic duvets have a lighter, airier feel, making them ideal for those who toss and turn a lot. Feather and down duvets can sometimes trigger symptoms for allergy sufferers, so a hypoallergenic, synthetic option is often the perfect alternative.

Thanks to their lightweight filling, synthetic duvets can also be washed more regularly, making them a popular choice for those with little ones.

What Are Synthetic Duvets Made of?

Our synthetic duvets are manufactured by Dacron, the world leader in artificial fibres. Two of our most popular synthetic filling options are hollow fibre and microfibre.

Hollowfibre

Hollowfibre duvets and pillows feature fibres with hollow centres, providing greater loft and springiness. These thick, wire-like fibres are durable yet warm and cosy. Hollowfibre filling is an excellent choice for pillows as it maintains its shape night after night. Explore our Good as Goose bedding for more details about this luxurious filling.

Microfibre

Microfibres are significantly finer than hollowfibres—six times as fine, in fact—and lack hollow centres. This ultra-soft filling is designed to replicate the luxury of natural down, offering exceptional softness. Microfibre duvets are ideal if you want the warmth and lightness of down without using natural materials.

Whichever filling you choose, you can rest assured that your bedding is of the highest quality. All fabrics and fillings used in our bedding are certified Oeko-Tex Standard 100 compliant, meaning they’re free of harmful nasties.

Sustainable Synthetic Duvets – A Secret Linen
Store Exclusive!

Our Bottle Bedding is the one for you if you are looking to make positive steps towards a more sustainable bedtime. This innovative fill, known as Aerelle Blue, is made from plastic bottles that have been literally fished out of the ocean.

Through an innovative production process, plastic is then recycled and transformed into a beautiful, fluffy fill for our Bottle Bedding. Similar in feel and appearance to hollow-fibre filling, we have a matching bed linen set crafted from this material, including a lofty, plump pillow and a cosy, full duvet.

You can sleep even more soundly knowing you’re helping to do your bit for our lovely planet by reducing ocean plastic!

For those of you wanting a big bouncy duvet, we highly recommend our Big Softie. As the name suggests, this duvet is full, light and lofty, and ever so soft. The lofty hollowfibre fill will keep you cosy and the duvet looking full and luxurious.

If you are a lover of down but would prefer to avoid the real thing (and its price tag), then our Good as Goose might be the duvet for you. The microfibre filling mimics down and has a lovely drape and softness as well as being incredibly light.
