Bedding Jargon Buster
Here we decode everything Bed Linen. Learn your Oxford from your Housewife and finally discover what Thread Count actually means.
Brushed Cotton – Soft and cosy, brushed cotton is perfect for those who want a little extra warmth in their bedding.
Chambray – A light, woven fabric that combines different coloured threads to give a subtle texture and visual depth.
Duvet Cover – A protective cover for your duvet, making it easier to wash and switch up the look of your bed.
Envelope Pillowcase – A pillowcase with a flap that neatly tucks the pillow inside, so no pillow peekage!
Fitted Sheet – A sheet with elasticated edges designed to fit snugly over your mattress, keeping it in place and creating a smooth base.
Flat Sheet – A simple rectangular sheet that goes on top of the fitted sheet (or directly on the mattress), used for added comfort or layering.
Flax – The plant from which linen is made, known for its durability and breathability.
Gingham – Gingham is woven pattern, with a distinctive check in simple squares, traditionally in white or off white with one other colour.
Hemstitch – A decorative, open stitch often found on the borders of pillowcases and sheets for a delicate touch.
Herringbone – A pattern where lines are arranged in a zigzag formation, often used in fabric designs for a classic look.
Housewife Pillowcase – A pillowcase with asimple envelope fastening and no border.
Jacquard – A weaving technique that creates beautiful patterns directly in the fabric, rather than printed on top.
Linen – Naturally breathable and slightly textured, linen softens beautifully with every wash and keeps you cool in summer, warm in winter.
Organic Cotton – Cotton grown without the use of chemicals such as fertilisers and pesticides.
Oxford Pillowcase – A pillowcase with a decorative fabric border around the edges for an elegant, framed look.
Percale – A crisp, cool weave that’s perfect for anyone who likes their sheets fresh and breathable.
Piece Dyed – When a duvet cover or pillowcases is hemmed before it is dyed, giving a unique and textured finish.
Pillowcase Closure – The way your pillow is held in its case, from standard envelope to Oxford edges with an extra fabric border.
Pillowcases – Soft covers that encase your pillows, often available in both standard and Oxford styles (with or without a decorative border).
Piped Edging – A little strip of fabric sewn into the seams for a tailored, finished look.
Pre-Washed – Fabric that’s been washed before it reaches you, so it’s extra soft and ready to sleep in.
Sateen – A smooth, silky weave with a subtle sheen that’s wonderfully soft and slightly warmer than percale.
Seersucker – Seersucker is a lightweight, puckered cotton fabric known for its breathable, crinkled texture, which helps keep it cool and airy.
Stonewashed – A special process that gives linen a soft, relaxed look and feel straight out of the box.
Thread Count – The number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric. The higher the count, the smoother the sheet feels.

All Seasons Duvet – A combination of two duvets (light and medium weight) that can be used separately or together.
Baffle Box Construction – Sewing method that keeps the filling evenly distributed across a duvet.
Batiste Cover – A lightweight and breathable luxuury cotton fabric used in high-quality duvets.
Downproof – Specially woven fabric that prevents feathers or down from escaping the duvet.
Duck Down – A more affordable alternative to goose down, offering similar warmth but heavier.
Duvet – The soft, fluffy inner filled with down, feathers, or synthetic fibres, designed to keep you warm.
Encasing – The outer cotton fabric that holds the filling inside.
Feather Filling – Heavier than down, feathers provide loft and warmth at a lower cost.
Fill Power – A measurement of the quality of down, indicating its insulating power and loft.
Goose Down – High-quality, lightweight natural filling from geese, known for superior insulation.
Hollowfibre – A synthetic filling known for being hypoallergenic and easy to wash.
Hypoallergenic - Designed to reduce the likelihood of allergic reactions, common in synthetic fillings.
Loft – Refers to the fluffiness of the duvet, typically higher loft means more insulation.
Machine Washable – Indicates that the duvet or pillow can be cleaned in a standard washing machine without damage.
Mattress Protector – A cover that sits between your mattress and fitted sheet, helping to protect the mattress from spills, allergens, and wear.
Microfibre – A finer synthetic filling that mimics the softness of down.
Moisture-wicking – The ability of the material (e.g., wool) to pull moisture away from the body and allow it to evaporate.
Pillows – Soft, supportive cushions for your head, available in various levels of firmness and fillings.
Recycled Down – A sustainable option, using cleaned and repurposed down to reduce waste.
Thread Count – The number of threads per square inch in fabric; higher thread counts indicate finer, softer materials.
Tog Rating – A measurement of a duvet's thermal insulation, indicating how warm it will be.
Wool Filling – Natural filling made of combed wool from a sheep that regulates temperature by wicking moisture away.

Bolster – A long, cylindrical cushion often used for decorative purposes or support.
Cushion – A soft pad used for sitting or resting, typically covered in fabric and used for decorative purposes.
Embroidered – Decorative stitching applied to fabric to create patterns or designs, enhancing the visual appeal of cushions or throws.
Fringing – Decorative tassels or strands of fabric that hang from the edges of a cushion or throw for added texture.
Herringbone – A pattern where lines are arranged in a zigzag formation, often used in fabric designs for a classic look.
Jacquard – A type of fabric with intricate patterns woven directly into the fabric rather than printed on top.
Knit – A fabric created by interlocking loops of yarn, often used for throws for a soft, stretchy feel.

Quilt – A type of bedding that consists of three layers: a top layer, a middle layer of padding, and a bottom layer of backing. Quilts are often stitched or tacked through all layers to keep the padding in place and add texture.
Quilted – A technique where layers of fabric are stitched together to create a padded texture, often used in throws.
Reversible – A cushion or throw that can be used on either side, offering two different looks.
Tassels – Decorative knots or fringes attached to the corners or edges of cushions or throws.
Throw – A small, decorative blanket or coverlet used for warmth or style, often draped over furniture.
Weave – The pattern in which fabric fibers are interlaced, such as plain, twill, or satin.

Know Your Towels
Consider this your one-stop guide to translating towel terminology.
Bath Sheet – A larger version of a standard bath towel, offering extra coverage and comfort after a bath or shower.
Bath Towel – The standard size towel for drying off after a shower, usually measuring around 70 x 140 cm.
Border – The decorative strip along the edge of the towel, often with a different weave or pattern.
Face Cloth – A small towel for washing and drying your face, sometimes called a flannel.GSM- Grams per square meter of towelling, used on Terry Towels only to describe the weight of the towel.
Hand Towel – A smaller towel used for drying hands, often placed in the bathroom or kitchen.

We're always trying to make things better here and, with that, comes a whole lot more VIJ (Very Important Jargon). It's super important that we make the right sustainability claims, and we want to make sure you understand all the wonderful work we're doing.
OEKO-TEX® Certified – OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Certification tests for harmful substances in textiles. Factories get audited annually, ensuring they are adhering to the high standards OEKO-TEX® set.
B Corp – B Corp, or Benefit Corporation, represents a type of business that values not only profits but also social and environmental impact. The B Corp movement is transforming the global economy to benefit all people, communities, and the planet. B Corps are Certified by B Lab, these companies meet strict standards of performance, transparency, and accountability.
Duntrack® Traceability Standard – Our feathers and down are sourced through the Duntrack® Traceability Standard. This is a framework designed to ensure transparency and traceability throughout the supply chain. The standard audits and certifies at all stages from source to product, making sure responsible processes are adhered to throughout the supply chain.
GOTs – We are certified to the Global Organic Textile Standard, which certifies, and tracks organically grown cotton from the source to final product.Impact Report - As part of our B Corp commitment, we will publish an annual Impact Report. Impact reports are important for evaluating businesses, from supply chain practices to employee benefits, all through the lens of social and environmental impact.

Biodegradable Product Bags – Our biodegradable packaging has been designed to safely biodegrade without leaving any potential harm to the environment, the films do not leave microplastics behind upon degradation. Please place in normal waste streams.
Paper Ecommerce Bags – We use paper packaging for all our ecommerce orders. Our bags should be suitable for curb side recycling, or you can explore creative options such as repurposing them as gift wrapping paper. (Please always check your local recycling requirements.)
